Korean skincare offers several formats aimed at blemish-prone and blackhead-prone skin. Here is what each one is and where it sits in a routine.
Spot patches
Hydrocolloid patches applied over an individual spot. They come in two broad styles: thicker overnight patches, and ultra-thin matte patches designed to be less visible during the day and worn under makeup. See the COSRX patch range.
Sheet masks
Where a patch covers one spot, a sheet mask covers the whole face. Used a few times a week rather than daily, after serum and before moisturiser.
Exfoliating toner pads
Pre-soaked pads, usually formulated with AHA, BHA and PHA. Applied after cleansing, often with a textured side and a smooth side. Used in place of a liquid toner on the days you use them.
Clay and mud masks
Rinse-off masks used once or twice a week. Applied to clean dry skin, left until dry, then rinsed. They sit outside the daily routine.
Niacinamide ampoules
The targeted serum step. Products state the concentration, such as niacinamide 10. Applied after toner and before moisturiser.
Cleansing oils
The first cleanse, for removing makeup and sunscreen. Oil cleansers with heartleaf extract are common in Korean routines for congested skin. See Korean cleansers.
A note on layering
Introduce one new product at a time. Using several exfoliating or active products together is the most common cause of irritation, and it makes it impossible to tell what is working.
Sunscreen still applies
Exfoliating acids and retinol increase sensitivity to sun. Sunscreen remains the final morning step. See our guide to choosing a Korean sunscreen.
